December 21 Journal

Today is the last day to make a submission on your essay. Be sure you stay on task and are focused. When you are done with your 3rd submission you need to copy and paste your submissions into the "Rewrite". You may go into Study Island when you are done with everything. Today is your last day in the lab for this year, make it count. You have until tomorrow to get your essay done. Remember you need to have three submissions done by Friday.

2. Make a list of four gifts you could give that cost one dollar or less. Then tell whom you would give them to.

December 19 Journal

You only have today and Friday to work on your submissions so get going after you are done with your journal. I will be staying after school today until 4 pm in case anyone needs to come in and work- just be sure you have a ride arranged a head of time.

1. Create a new family tradition for celebrating the holidays. Explain what would make this tradition so special to your family.


2. Imagine that you are a pioneer living on the prairie. Describe what your life is like this time of year.

December 18 Journal

You only have today and Thursday in the Writing Lab. After this journal, log into My Access and begin working on your submissions. Remember you have to have three done by Friday. I will be staying after school until 4 pm today and Wednesday if anyone needs to come in, just be sure you have a ride home.

1. Pretend that you wake up one morning during winter vacation to discover that the rest of your family left for a trip without you. Write about what happens next.
2. This year is almost over. Make a list of three things that you did well this past yer. Then write a list of three things you hope to accomplish next year.

December 17 Journal

I am at the orthodontist getting my braces put on today. Yes that is right, braces. My mom couldn't afford to get them for me when I was your age, so I am getting them for myself now. Keep your fingers crossed that things go well.

2. Pretend that it is December 17, 2121. The Wright brothers would have flown their first airplane 218 years ago. Write a IM to the brothers describing what air travel is like in this year (2121 not 2007).

December 14 Journal

Hello! We are going to finish the movie today and then work in Persuasive Wizard. You need to develop your thesis and three arguments today! Don't forget that this weekend you need to write your rough draft and submit submission 1. I am only going to see you Tuesday and Thursday of next week and the essay is due then.

1. Imagine that while everyone was sleeping last night, an elf came into the Writing Lab. Why did he come? What did he do? Describe what happened to your classroom.


2. Imagine that you are buying a holiday gift for a friend and the store clerk gives you too much change back. Explain what you would do.

December 13 Journal

When you are done with your journal, take out your t-chart from the other day. We are going to begin watching "Miracle on 34th Street" and look for pros/cons of if Santa exists.

1. Imagine that a card company has asked you to design a holiday card. What would your card look like, and what would it say? Explain.

After your journal, please take out your t-chart. Start thinking about the difference between concrete and abstract nouns.

1. Imagine that you wake up in the middle of the night to find a sack of gifts at the foot of your bed. You reach inside of the sack and pull out the perfect gift. Describe the gift.


2. Poinsettias are flowering plants that are popular around this time of year. Make a list of 5 other items that are generally only found this time of year.

2. Pretend that you open today's newspaper and find a help wanted ad for Santa's workshop. Write Santa a letter convincing him to hire you to work in his workshop.

2. Imagine that you are mistakenly locked inside a factory that makes your favorite food and you aren't found for several days. Explain how you feel after being discovered.

1. Today is America Recycles Day. Imagine that you've just invented a machine that recycles a common everyday item by turning it into something fabulous. Write about what your machine recycles and what the items become.
2. Pretend that your teacher is moving away and your principal has asked you to write a help wanted ad for a new teacher. What would your ad say?

1. William Steig, author of the book Shrek! was born on November 14. Imagine that story your wrote is being made into a movie. Write a radio ad encouraging people to see the movie.

Yesterday was Veteran's Day. After you do your journal, you will write a letter to a veteran. Please look under November 12 Journal for directions to the letter.

When you are done with your journal, you may work in either Study Island or My Access. Remember today is the last day to get your essay into My Access.

Today is Veteran's Day. You need to write a letter that will be sent to the Veteran's Hospital in Chicago. In the letter I would like you to

• write one paragraph briefly telling about yourself,
• one paragraph telling the veteran what living in a free America means to you,
• and one paragraph thanking them for serving in the military.

Don't forget to sign your name. I have put out markers and colored pencils if you'd like to color the boarders. I want you to compose this letter once you are done with your journal.

Once you are done with the letter, you may work in Study Island or work on your essay that is due today in My Access.

1. Pretend that you just won free tickets to your favorite musical artist's concert. The problem is if you go to the concert, you will miss your best friend's birthday party. Explain what you would do.

RESPECT — Respect means showing genuine regard for the worth of people, including yourself. It doesn’t mean that we hold everyone in high esteem or admire them. It means that everyone’s safety and well-being matters, and that all people have value. We show respect by honoring a person’s dignity and privacy, by acting courteously, by accepting and tolerating different cultures, styles of dress, traditions and opinions, and by acknowledging that everyone has the right to make up his own mind. In other words, we live by the Golden Rule: we treat others the way we want to be treated. It means we never treat others simply as a means to our own gratification or gain. Drug abuse works against respect for others and for ourselves.

CITIZENSHIP — Citizenship refers to the duties, rights, conduct and responsibilities of the citizens of a state. To be a good citizen means that we seek the common good for everyone: our family, friends and loved ones; our neighborhood; our community; our city, state, country — even the whole planet. Good citizens participate in the democratic process (voting, jury duty, paying taxes, etc.), obey laws and help take care of the environment.

In honor of Red Ribbon Week those of you wearing Black and Gold today will earn 1 extra credit point in class.

After today's journal, come and see me for the Bridges survey (for Red Ribbon Week). When you are done with the survey you may move into Study Island.

I am also going to be telling you your grade thus far and if extra credit is beneficial to you. If you have an outstanding essay missing it is due by Wednesday, Oct 22 at midnight, or it will be a zero.

TRUSTWORTHINESS — When someone is trustworthy you can have confidence in him. Trustworthiness shows itself in at least four different ways. First, there is integrity. That’s when your thoughts, words and actions all agree with each other. Second, there is honesty. That’s when you tell the truth, sometimes volunteering information because it is essential or important for another person to know. Thirdly, you show trustworthiness by keeping your promises, meaning you do what you say you will do. And fourthly, you are trustworthy if you are loyal. That means you support your friends, family, commitments and your country.
It is impossible to have meaningful relationships without trust. And that’s one of the problems with using illegal drugs: it undermines trust.

Answer all three questions today.

1. Can you trust someone who abuses or is addicted to drugs? Why?
2. Can you trust someone who is high?
3. Where is the drug addict’s loyalty: to his drugs or to people who care about him?

1. Thomas Edison died on this day in 1931. He was a famous inventor who invented the lightbulb, phonograph, and many other things. If you could ask Thomas Edison three questions what would they be? Why?


2. Today is Zac Efron's birthday. As you know Zac was the lead in High School Musical. If you could ask Zac give Zac a birthday present what would it be? Explain.

Good morning. When you are done with your journal you will have 30 minutes in Study Island and then I want you to move into My Access for the remainder of class. Remember you need to read the Mars article and do the graphic organizer before you begin writing the letter to the President.

1. Fire Prevention Week is celebrated in October. Write a paragraph convincing someone to install fire detectors and to check them regularly.
2. October is National Roller Skating Month. Imagine that you find a card tucked in a pair of skates that says "To scale (climb) the sides of buildings, touch your nose. To fly, tug your ear." Write about what happens next.

1. The CD player was introduced on this day in 1982. Name a CD that you plan to have in your collection for years to come. Explain.
2. The first Monday in October is Child Health Day. Pretend you are a newborn baby. Write a letter to your parents explaining what they should do to keep you healthy and safe as you grow up. Remember this is pretend, so yes, you as a baby can write a letter :-)

September 28 Journal

Happy Friday. When you are done with your journal, begin in Study Island immediately. You will have 30 minutes and then begin your writing in My Access.

I just wanted to thank you for coming to our Open House. Here at Dirksen we want to build a relationship between home and school. We want to know our students and those who care for them. I have been so blessed over the last few days to not only get to know my students, but you as well through our emails and the survey.
